Meet World’s Top Adventure Riders and Tour Experts
Simon and Lisa Thomas
Simon & Lisa are considered by many to be the world’s foremost Adventure Motorcyclists, with more ‘real-world’ experience than anyone on the road today! They have ridden their way into a life that most of us can only imagine. Since setting out on their journey in 2003, the duo has amassed an insane 450,000 miles on their ride, through 78 countries on six continents. Along the way they’ve traversed 27 deserts, survived a broken neck in the Amazon jungle, cheated death and are still traveling today. It’s easy to say that Lisa & Simon helped define what we now call “Adventure Riding”. As explorers, writers, photographers and public speakers, this pair inspire adventure. Lois is a British travel author, journalist and broadcaster. She is also co-founder of the Adventure Travel Film Festival. In 2003 she left her job at the BBC in London to ride 20,000 miles from Alaska to the tip of South America on a small dirt bike. Her book about this trip, Lois on the Loose, has been published throughout the world. In 2006 she rode the length of Africa hence her book, Red Tape & White Knuckles. In 2013/2014, intrigued by the negative image of Iran and its stormy relationship with her homeland, she made 2 solo motorcycle tours of the Islamic Republic, discovering the complicated reality of this misunderstood but ultimately fascinating and hospitable country. Her new book, Revolutionary Ride, will debut at the Timonium Motorcycle Show!
Austin is one of Europe’s most respected adventure motorcyclists who is also one of the funniest. He’s the man behind two cult movies, Mondo Enduro and Terra Circa. It all started back in ’95 when Austin and Company set out to ride around the world by the longest route possible on used Suzuki DR 350’s. En route they became embroiled in a 400 mile road-less section of Siberia they nicknamed ‘The Zilov Gap’. After this dispiriting section they clattered another 2,000 miles becoming the first Europeans ever, to get to Magadan via the so-called ‘Road of Bones’. This was immediately followed by the 18,000 miles from Alaska to Chile, then another 10,000 miles from South Africa back to London. All this in an age before mobile phones, the internet and totally unsupported and unsponsored. 2001 they crossed Russia once more (on the same bikes) and finally conquering ‘The Zilov Gap’…making them the 1st team to get across Siberia without using the train. He pushes the message that “anyone can do this stuff”!
Steph Jeavons is a woman on a mission. In March 2014 she set off from the iconic Ace Café in London in an attempt to ride to all seven continents on her Honda CRF250L, named Rhonda. Steph and Rhonda have now ridden further than any 250cc has gone before with their many miles together taking them through the deserts of Iran, the chaos of India, the heights of the Himalayas and the jungles of Borneo (to name but a few).
